About The Library | Emergency Closing Information

The SAIS policy on weather emergencies is to remain open if at all possible. Because SAIS Library is open many hours when the rest of the school is closed, following are the guidelines for library closing in the event of weather emergencies:

In the event of severe weather conditions which make it necessary to close the school before it opens on a weekday, the library will be closed as well.  Announcements will be made on the SAIS website as well as:

  • Radio station WTOP (AM 1500) or WASH FM (FM 97.1)
  • DC TV stations WJLA-TV (channel 7) , WRC TV (channel 4) and WUSA-TV (channel 9)
  • JHU Weather Hotline at 1-800-548-9004
  • JHUniverse at http://webapps.jhu.edu/emergencynotices
  • Note that "SAIS" is usually not mentioned in closing information - listen for Johns Hopkins

Weekday closings
If severe weather conditions force the school to close early on a weekday, we will make every effort to staff the library and remain open as long as possible. If in doubt, call the Library circulation desk at 202-663-5900 or the Nitze guard’s desk at 202-663-5600.

Weekend closings
In the event of severe weather conditions on a weekend, we will make every effort to find staff who are able to keep the library open as many of its normal hours as possible. If weather conditions are poor, however, please call the guard at 202-663-5600 before leaving for SAIS.

Thank you,

Sheila Thalhimer
Director of the Library
