To print to the Nitze Basement printer, the HP LaserJet 8150 printer and the Pharos software must be installed on your laptop. You must be connected to the "hopkins" wireless network (instructions here). Note that laptop printing will not work with the "JHGuestnet" wireless network. Please note that the HP LaserJet 8150 printer in the SAIS Basement is configured to charge you for printing double-sided sheets of paper. You must also set up this option on your laptop once you have installed the printer and Pharos software (see instructions below). If you want to print single-sided sheets of paper, please use Printer E in the Library's Laptop Room. Windows XP/Vista Mac OS X For Windows XP or Vista, please perform the following steps: First, you must add the following WINS IP address to your Wireless Card's network settings:
128.220.183.25
To do this, go to the Control Panel on your system and select "Network Connections" (if you use Windows XP) or "Network and Sharing Center" and then "Manage Network Connections" (if you use Windows Vista). Right-click the Wireless Connection and select "Properties." Select the TCP/IP (TCP/IPv4) properties option and then find the WINS addresses page (for Windows XP and Vista, you will need to click the "Advanced" button to get to the WINS addresses page). Add in the above IP address as a WINS address. Then, follow the instructions listed below. - Download the "hostsedit" application from here and save it onto your laptop. Do not run this program; you simply need to download it and save it.
- You must then download and run the "SAIS_Library_Laptop" batch file to add an entry into one of your system's files (the hosts file). This file must be saved in the same location as the "hostsedit" file in step # 1. Download the file from here and then run it (either by opening it when it finishes downloading or by double-clicking on it). You will see an installation window flash quickly. Continue with the steps listed below.
To install the double-sided SAIS Basement Printer
- To install the double-sided HP LaserJet 8150 printer and the Pharos software, download the installation program by clicking here. Make sure to select the option to "Save this file to disk."
- After the file has been saved to your system, find it and double-click it. Click "Install" to start the installation process.
- When finished, click "Finish" to exit the installation window. The printer should now be installed on your system. The printer name will be "SAIS-Basement on SYSTEMS." Do not change the name of this printer.
- Once the printer is installed, you must set up the printer so that it will default to print double-sided sheets of paper. To do this, go to the Control Panel and click on the "Printers" or "Printers and Faxes" icon (the steps below may vary slightly for Windows Vista).
- Right-click the "SAIS-Basement on SYSTEMS" printer and select "Properties."
- Go to the "Device Settings" tab and look for the "Installable Options" section. For "Duplex Unit," select "Installed." After making this change, click on "Apply."
- Go to the "General" tab and click on the "Printing Preferences" button. On the "Layout" tab, under "Print on Both Sides," make sure that "Flip on Long Edge" is selected. Select this option if it is not selected. Click on "OK" to close the "Printing Preferences" options and click on "OK" again to close the printer's properties. This printer will now default to print double-sided sheets of paper.
For Macintosh OS X, please perform the following steps: To install the Pharos software, download the installation program by clicking here. After the file has been saved to your system, double-click it to run the Pharos installation program. You will be requested to authenticate yourself as an administrator. - Select a destination disk. You will only be able to select the startup disk.
- Click <Install>. The installer automatically installs Popup 8.0 and required support files. Continue with the steps listed below.
Installation for Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)
- Open the Printer Setup Utility in </Applications/Utilities/>.
- Click the <Add> button in the toolbar, then hold down the <Option> key on the keyboard and click the <More Printers...> button.
- From the topmost popup button, select <Advanced>.
- From the device popup button, select <Pharos Print Server>.
- In the device name field, enter a name for the new printer queue.
- In the device URI field, enter the Unified Resource Identifier for the desired Popup queue on the Pharos Print Server. This entry should be "popup://128.220.183.25/SAIS-Basement", without the quotes. Please note that you must select the box for "Duplex Unit" (double-sided printing; see step # 8).
- From the printer model popup button, select the type of printer associated with the Popup queue. The printer is the HP LaserJet 8150.
- Click <Add>. The new Popup queue will now show up in the list of printers. For "Installable Options," you must select the box for "Duplex Unit" (double-sided printing).
- To print to the new queue, select it from the printer popup button in the print dialog box of any application. If you are printing to the double-sided printer, please make sure that duplex/double-sided printing is selected in the print dialog box of the application you are printing from.
Installation for Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) Open System Preferences and click on the <Print & Fax> icon. Click the <+> button. Hold down the <Control> key on the keyboard and click anywhere on the toolbar. From the popup menu that appears, select <Customize Toolbar...>. Drag the <Advanced> icon to the toolbar and close the customization dialog. Click on the <Advanced> button in the toolbar. - From the <Type> popup button, select <Pharos Print Server>.
- In the URL field, enter the Unified Resource Identifier for the desired Popup queue on the Pharos Print Server. This entry should be "popup://128.220.183.25/SAIS-Basement", without the quotes. Please note that you must select the box for "Duplex Unit" (double-sided printing; see step # 10).
- In the <Name> field, enter a name for the new printer queue.
- From the printer model popup button, select the type of printer associated with the Popup queue. The printer is the HP LaserJet 8150.
- Click <Add>. The new Popup queue will now show up in the list of printers. Make sure that "Optional Duplex Unit" or "Duplex Unit" is checked in the window that shows you the printer's options.
- To print to the new queue, select it from the printer popup button in the print dialog box of any application. If you are printing to the double-sided printer, please make sure that duplex/double-sided printing is selected in the print dialog box of the application you are printing from.
