How do I get access to Library resources when off-campus? JHU uses a proxy system that is really easy! All you have to do is click on a database link and you'll be prompted to enter your JHED login ID and password. How do I set up wireless? We have an instruction page with all the details. How do I add money to my Jcard for printing/copying? The Library has a vend unit near the Circulation Desk. You can add money (cash only) to your account there or see someone in the Business Office on floor 3 of the Nitze building. May I bring food or drink into the Library? Yes, you are welcome to bring your lunch or any other food into the Library. Since food and electronics don't mix, please keep them away from computers, copiers, and the Circulation Desk. What is ERes? ERes stands for electronic reserves, or digitized course readings. We only post required materials within the realm of "fair use," meaning that you will generally not see more than 10% of a book on ERes. We recommend that you always check ERes first for any course readings. Print reserves lists can be found in the Catalog. How / where can I buy textbooks for courses? SAIS does not have an actual "bookstore." We use MBS Direct, an online bookstore. Students who are interested in buying books for their courses should go to www.mbsdirect.net, type in “Johns Hopkins”, select SAIS, and find a list of courses for which books are available. How long does it take to get an interlibrary loan book /article? Although the times may vary, in general: - Books from other JHU libraries can take between 1 and 3 days, depending on the work load at SAIS and in Baltimore. Note that requests placed directly through the JHU Libraries Catalog arrive more quickly.
- Books from non-JHU libraries usually take between 10 and 14 days to arrive though some may take longer. Articles are generally available within a week. Please plan ahead when doing research for papers and other projects.
How will I know when materials I've ordered from other libraries have arrived? The Library communicates with users via email whenever possible. If you would like notices sent to your email address, you can register at http://notices.mse.jhu.edu/email.php What is a "JHED login id" and how do I get mine? A JHED login ID (or "LID") is a unique identifier for your information in the JHU Enterprise Directory. You can use this LID to gain remote access to our databases and interlibrary loan services. It should not be confused with any barcodes on your various ID cards. If you don't know your login ID, please go to the JHU Portal at http://my.jhu.edu/ to look yourself up by name and do a "first-time login" to obtain a password. I'd like to go home at 4:45. Overnight checkout time is only 15 minutes away. Why can't I check something out overnight early? Reserve books are always heavily in demand. It would be unfair for students to come to the desk at 5:00 pm to find out that the items they need have already gone out early. Therefore we adhere to a strict 5:00 pm checkout time (3:00 pm on Friday and Saturday).
How can I guarantee I'll get reserve materials overnight? Each hold only guarantees a three-hour spot; consequently, placing a hold for 5:00 pm would allow someone else to place a hold for 8:00 pm or later. If you want to guarantee an item for overnight checkout, place the hold for 8:00 pm (three hours before closing). You may still check the book out any time after 5:00 pm if the item is on the shelf and has no other holds. (*Note that since the Library closes at 9:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, the overnight hold time on those days is 6:00 pm; overnight checkout begins at 3:00 pm).
How can I renew my 6-week books? There are four ways to renew your books: - Email: saislibrary@jhu.edu
- Renew Online
- Call Us: (202) 663-5900
- In Person: You don't even need to bring in your books. Simply give us your Jcard and we can renew for you.
Note: If you are renewing non-JHU materials, you may not use online renewal. To renew ILL materials, please speak to a reference librarian or call (202) 663-5901. Can I return my books when the Library is closed? Yes. There is a book drop in the lobby and a guard is on duty 24 hours a day. When the building is closed, if you don't see that guard, push the buzzer to the right of the door. The guard will be glad to place your books in the drop. Where can I find syllabi or course evaluations? The Library keeps recent copies of syllabi (reading lists) in notebooks near the Circulation Desk. You can also find them online. Course evaluations are maintained by the Office of the Dean for Academic Affairs. They have an online site that requires a JHED login and password. Who can use the Group Study Rooms? The group study rooms are available for sign-up by all SAIS student groups of 2 or more. In order to make the rooms available to as many students as possible we ask that no group sign up for more than 2 hours per day. We regret that we cannot allow non-SAIS groups to reserve a room.
