SAIS Hosted Book Event on Shah of Iran on December 3
On Wednesday, December 3, Gholam Reza Afkhami, senior scholar at the Foundation for Iranian Studies, discussed his new book, The Life and Times of the Shah. Commentary was provided by Kenneth Pollack, director of research at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution; Vali Nasr, professor of international politics at the Tufts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; and Azar Nafisi (moderator), director of SAIS Cultural Conversations. SAIS Graduate Pam Flaherty to Chair JHU Board of Trustees
Pamela P. Flaherty, a 1968 SAIS graduate and president and CEO of Citigroup Foundation, will take office on July 1 as the 15th chair of The Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees. Flaherty, who has led the SAIS Advisory Council since 2003, is the first SAIS graduate and the first woman to chair the board of trustees. Click here for JHU's announcement. Hopkins-Nanjing Center to Celebrate 20th Anniversary in June
On June 22 and 23, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies hosted its 20th anniversary celebration and reunion at the Nanjing campus. The celebration culminated in the presentation of an award to former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Other events included the 2007 graduation ceremony, keynote address by Kissinger, alumni dinners, panel discussions, building dedication, concert and gala ball. SAIS Hosted Forum on Trafficking in Persons on June 20
Mark Lagon, the newly appointed director of the U.S. State Department's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, discussed the department's recently released "2007 Trafficking in Persons Report" during a forum at SAIS on Wednesday, June 20.

Sen. John Kerry and Former Sen. Gary Hart Spoke at SAIS National Security Symposium
On Thursday, June 14 and Friday, June 15, the SAIS Center for Transatlantic Relations and the American Security Project (ASP) hosted a symposium, "Shaping a Sensible Strategy to Ensure America's National Security: A Conversation About Values, Issues and Solutions." Featured speakers included Gary Hart, former senator (D-Colo.) and ASP board chairman, and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.).

SAIS Hosted Forum on Global Peace Index on June 12
SAIS and Search for Common Ground co-hosted a forum, "The Global Peace Index: Its Value and Implications and the Next Steps," on Tuesday, June 12. Panelists included Charles Dambach, Alliance for Peacebuilding president and CEO; Harriet Mayor Fulbright, president of the J. William and Harriet Fulbright Center; Michael Lund, specialist for conflict and peacebuilding at Management Systems International, Inc.; John McDonald, Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy chairman and CEO; and Ola Storberg, Norwegian Embassy first secretary. The GPI ranks the peacefulness of 121 nations by analyzing 24 indicators of internal and external peacefulness and correlating them with other factors. Norway ranks first, and the United States is 96th.

The SAIS Center on Politics and Foreign Relations and the Financial Times hosted "Democratic Debate on Iraq: Presidential Candidates Present Their Views," on Wednesday, June 6. The following 2008 Democratic presidential candidates participated: Senator Joseph Biden, former Senator Mike Gravel and Congressman Dennis Kucinich.  Click here for more information.
