SAIS Hosted Book Event on Shah of Iran on December 3
On Wednesday, December 3, Gholam Reza Afkhami, senior scholar at the Foundation for Iranian Studies, discussed his new book, The Life and Times of the Shah. Commentary was provided by Kenneth Pollack, director of research at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution; Vali Nasr, professor of international politics at the Tufts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; and Azar Nafisi (moderator), director of SAIS Cultural Conversations. Nominations for 2005 SAIS Employee of the Year Award Now Being Accepted

SAIS Professor Thayer Receives Award from Japanese Government
Nathaniel Thayer, the Yasuhiro Nakasone Professor in the SAIS Japan Studies Program, was awarded the Japanese government's Order of Rising Sun, Gold Rays with the Neck Ribbon during a ceremony on July 11 at Ambassador Ryozo Kato's residence in Washington, D.C. The honor recognized Thayer's accomplishments in the promotion of the understanding of Japan and the strengthening of Japanese studies in the United States.

SAIS Professor Gleijeses Receives Guggenheim Fellowship
Piero Gleijeses, SAIS professor of American foreign policy, has been named a 2005 Guggenheim Fellow to pursue his research on Cuban and U.S. policy toward Southern Africa in the Carter and Reagan years. The 186 fellows, chosen from more than 3,000 applicants of artists, scholars and scientists, are appointed on the basis of distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment. This year, Gleijeses is one of six Johns Hopkins faculty members awarded Guggenheim Fellows. Click here for more information.
