Resistance: Islamic Revival and Jihadist Terrorism

 
Discusses the Islamic revival in response to social change and Western expansion. Examines how revolutionary ideologies blended with an Islamic tradition of social mobilization and political action to form the modern jihad. Tracks jihad, both as a global phenomenon and in the context of locally rooted political activism. Reviews salafi-jihadist organizations, leaders and ideologies. (This is a cross-listed course offered by the Middle East Studies Program that also can fulfill a requirement for the Global Theory and History Program.) Limited to 16 students
