Principles and Practices of Conflict Management

This seminar serves as the general introduction to conflict management providing an integrated overview of the major topics and themes in the field of conflict prevention, crisis management, conflict resolution, and post conflict peace-building. This seminar seeks to present a sampling of some of the most important work in this rapidly growing area of research on theory, analysis, and the practice of conflict management. It will also explore theories about the roots of conflict and the causes of escalation to violence, as well as about the processes of ending violent conflict, de-escalating tensions, maintaining and enforcing "negative" peace (i.e., the absence of war) while trying to build sustainable, "positive" peace where the expectation of settling conflicts through the use of violence essentially disappears altogether.
