How does the formal process of foreign policy decision-making respond to pressures from Congress, the media, bureaucratic factions, outside interest groups, foreign embassies, and others? Who determines what is the "national interest"? This seminar looks at decision-making under real world conditions. It will provide students with unique insider insights into how American foreign policy decisions are really made, taking into account the range of political factors shaping those decisions. Co-taught by instructors who combine academic training with long practical experience in the American foreign policy process, the seminar will cover the role of various key institutions -- the Executive, Congress, interest groups, the media - in several critical policy decision areas.
