Examines the increasingly prominent role of the press, radio and television in influencing the relations among states. Considers media—often called “the fourth branch of governmentâ€ù in the United States—as a vital factor in making and executing foreign and military policies. Taught by a veteran diplomatic journalist, the course uses case studies as well as analysis of the historical and contemporary workings of news organizations and their interaction with governments. Requires several short writing assignments and a term paper in lieu of a final examination.
