Explores the tasks associated with managing international development NGOs. Examines strategic management, performance and sustainability and introduces analytic and management tools. Discusses issues including funding, scale of operations, accountability, marketing, local participation, comparative advantage and effectiveness. Analyzes NGO roles as project implementers, technical assistance providers, intermediaries, partners and advocates. Features guest lectures by leaders of NGOs and a capstone project in which teams of students work with NGOs in the Washington area on a policy and/or management issue. Limited to 18 students.
