Intellectuals and Politics

 
The course examines the reaction of European intellectuals to totalitarianism, both fascist and communist, and their critiques of totalitarian ideology and practice. Works (books, essays and films) by Hanna Arendt, Isaiah Berlin, Albert Camus, Vaclva Havel, Arthur Koestler, Primo Levi, George Orwell, Leni Riefenstahl, Ignazio Silone, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Andrzej Wajda, among others, will be the subject of seminars. All lessons will be characterized by the structured discussion of the set texts.
