What explains the rise of more responsive and effective states? This course examines competing theories on the foreign and domestic factors affecting governance; and the evidence on how variations in governance affect development. Focus on key issues (participation, foreign aid, revenues, transparency, rule of law, corruption, human rights, and global governance) and on tools useful in policy and advocacy.
