The world has embarked on an energy path that many deem unsustainable from a strategic, financial, environmental and development perspective. Multifaceted innovation is needed—in technology, governance, finance, policy and international diplomacy—to assure global security, fiscal sustainability, climate stability and an end to global energy poverty. Energy technology deployment on an unprecedented scale will be a vital and necessary driving force to achieve these objectives. The course focuses on the enormous challenges facing the international community in deploying new technologies with the necessary speed and scale, and explores possible solutions. This course assesses the risks and benefits associated with scaling up technological solutions to meet climate and security challenges. It does not focus exclusively on the policy framework required to drive technological innovation in the United States and other major countries. This lies within the domain of the “Policy to Drive Energy Innovationâ€ù course. As such, this course provides a good complement to the “Policy to Drive Energy Innovationâ€ù course.
