This course introduces students to thinking about risk in the international political economy so that they can better understand the complex decisions that face economic and political leaders in a globalized world. The course begins with basic notions of risk and uncertainty, progresses to more complex models for financial and economic risk, and the proceeds to broader considerations of political, social, and cultural risk. The emphasis is on method – how we should think about risk – and the empirical material builds on case studies of actual decisions. The course also includes a companion seminar series that involves a mix of conversations about ideas, experience, and careers in risk management. The course and companion seminar series was inspired and is supported by SAIS Bologna Center Advisory Council Member Robert S. Singer and builds on his experience as Chief Financial Officer at Gucci, and Chief Executive Officer at Abercrombie & Fitch and Barilla Holding S.p.A. (T&H)
