This course will examine issues relating to the functioning of the world’s food and agriculture system. Topics to be examined include: the role of agriculture in economic development; how agricultural development contributes to poverty reduction and food security; the supply side challenge of feeding a world population that is expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050; the impacts of climate change and the linkages between agricultural and energy markets international agricultural trade; and the role of agricultural policy (including agricultural trade policies). The aim is to provide students with an understanding of the major policy issues, illustrate ways in which economic analysis can lead to improved policy advice, and provide some insights into the mechanisms through which policy decisions are made.
