Conflict & Conflict Management in Southeast Asia

This course will explore the inter-relationship between internal conflict and conflict management in Southeast Asia. Over the past decade, most major armed conflicts in the world have taken place within, not between, existing states. The focus of this course is thus on violent internal conflicts such as civil wars, ethnic conflicts, secessionist struggles and the like. These kinds of conflicts are a feature of many Southeast Asia states, including Indonesia, Thailand, Burma and East Timor. The course will provide students with the ability to understand and analyse such conflicts. It will also examine various strategies of conflict management, including issues of international intervention, peacebuilding and peacekeeping, and the role of domestic actors and international institutions.
