Islam is both a religion and social order, consisting of devotional obligations and divine rules regulating civil and commercial relations. Course discusses origins and sources of Islamic law and schools of Islamic jurisprudence. Explores Islamic constitutional, banking, criminal, family, succession and international law. Studies cases where Islamic law is debated in American courts, whether as a foreign law or as a religious law interpreted before U.S. courts. Addresses Islamic legal traditions and regional case studies regarding human rights and women’s and minority rights. Take-home examination or paper.
