Al Qaeda, South Asia and the Global Islamic Jihadist Movement’s Future

 
Examines the role of terrorism in South Asia and the rise of international terrorism emanating from South Asian countries. Focuses on the increasing importance in the past decade of religious terrorism in South Asia, the intellectual roots of this terrorism, the incubation of an Islamist internationale during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, al Qaeda from its creation in 1989 to 9/11, American responses to al Qaeda and phase two of the “global war on terrorism.â€ù The second part of the course addresses the wider political and social context in which terrorism has flourished by examining Afghanistan under the Taliban and, since its fall, Pakistan under Nawaz Sharif and General Musharraf, the problem of Kashmir and relations between Hindus and Muslims in India. (This is a cross-listed course offered by the South Asia Studies Program that also can fulfill a requirement for the Strategic Studies Program).
