Mark Gilbert, Ph.D.

Background and Education

Before coming to Bologna, Gilbert was associate professor in contemporary history and international studies at the University of Trento (2002-2012) and lecturer in European studies at the University of Bath (1997-2002). He began his academic career as assistant professor of political science at Dickinson College (1993-1996). Gilbert is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He was educated (B.A. hons Politics) at Durham University and was awarded a Ph.D. in contemporary history by the University of Wales (1990).

Gilbert has contributed articles or review essays on historical topics to Contemporary European History, Contemporanea, European History Quarterly, International Politics, the Journal of Contemporary History, Journal of Common Market Studies, Journal of Modern Italian Studies, and other history journals. He has published on European or Italian current affairs on ForeignAffairs.com, and in leading magazines such as the National Interest, World Policy Journal, Political Quarterly and Government and Opposition. Recent chapters in edited volumes including Living Political Biography: Narrating 20th Century European Lives; The Oxford Handbook of the European Union; European Union History; European Foreign Policies;The Blackwell’s Companion to Europe since 1945; and L’Italia repubblicana vista da fuori (1945-2000)
