Has taught at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center since 1994; was previously a visiting scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute; in 2002, organized the Workshop on Dialogue Between Civilizations: A Dialogue Between Chinese Muslim and Non-Muslim Scholars; has completed extensive research on the development of Northwest China and the history of Northwestern Chinese ethnic minorities; with the support of China’s National Social Sciences Foundation and the Ford Foundation, has researched the current development of Chinese ethnic minorities, contemporary Chinese minority society and China’s minority policies; Ph.D., history and minority studies, Nanjing University
