Career Services | Staff Profiles

SAIS is fortunate to have a staff of seven working to assist students in all aspects of their professional development.  An introduction to each staff member appears below.  In addition to general counseling responsibilities, each counselor develops more specific knowledge in certain employment sectors which are listed in each profile.  Finally, staff members serve as liaisons to specific academic departments at SAIS, working with faculty and students within those concentrations.

Ron Lambert          
Director

Ron came to SAIS in 1995 from INSEAD, Europe’s largest graduate school of business located in Fontainebleau, France.  At INSEAD, Ron was the Director of Corporate Development.  With over 14 years of experience in career services, he was previously the Director of Career Services at American University and at Vassar College.

At SAIS, he oversees the strategic planning process for Career Services and leads domestic and international employer development efforts for the school.  He is also an adjunct faculty member in International Relations, where he teaches "Leaders and Leadership:  Principles and Practice."

Michael McKenzie
Senior Associate Director

Joining SAIS in June of 2004, Michael comes to SAIS from the University of Denver were he completed a dual degree in Higher Education Administration and International/Intercultural Communication. Prior to graduate school, he worked in Japan as a teacher, trainer, and did curriculum development. He also worked for Sigma Nu International Fraternity and has extensive experience working with administration, alumni, and students at universities and colleges across the U.S. 

Sector Focus: US Government, Foreign Government, Think Tanks/Research, Energy, Trade and Economics.

Martin Tillman     
Associate Director

Marty came to SAIS in 1999. Previously, he was Director of Education and Policy Outreach, and Manager of Civic Initiative Programs in the NIS at The Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs in Washington, D.C. He has over 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and has been a consultant to international institutions. His overseas experience includes work in India, Russia and Central Asia. He received a Fulbright grant to Japan. 

Sector Focus:  Primarily employers in Nonprofits, International Development, Development Consulting, Environment, Multilateral Institutions,  and USAID.

Colleen McCusker
Associate Director

Colleen Connolly McCusker brings over thirteen years of career management experience with graduate students and professionals in Europe and the Washington Metropolitan area.  Colleen has delivered career development programs for MBA populations at the Solvay Business Institute in Brussels, Belgium, at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland and at Georgetown University.  Additionally, she directed the first Career Development Office at the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University.  In her university experience,  Colleen has worked closely with international student groups, as well as with students targeting careers in finance, consulting, international development and socially responsible business.

Sector Focus:  Primarily private sector employers in Finance, Consulting and Journalism.


Janet Burrowes

Janet Burrowes 
Assistant Director, Employer Relations

Janet is a MBA graduate of Johns Hopkins University. Before coming to SAIS in 2001, she worked as a Business Sales Representative for Cable & Wireless PLC in Barbados. In her current role as Assistant Director, Janet works closely with the Director building and maintaining relationships with employers across all business sectors; she also manages all aspects of the on-campus recruiting program. Janet manages the office online career management systems and assists in overseeing the office budget.

Martina Leinz  
Professional Development Specialist

Martina joined SAIS in November 2006 to coordinate the Skills Courses Program. Prior to joining SAIS, Martina worked as an integrated marketing communications consultant for a number of non-profit and public sector clients. She also has many years of experience in higher education administration. She has a master's degree in corporate public relations from Northwesterm University and a bachelor's degree in political science from UCLA. Her international experience includes two years as a student in Sweden and two years in Japan where she worked as a corporate trainer.

Kathy Epstein
Alumni & MIPP Career Counselor

Kathy joined SAIS in November, 2008 to work with MIPPs and alumni. For the past 22 years, she has been in the field of executive search and worked for two of the largest international retained search firms. She was a partner in the technology and energy practices focusing on marketing, communications and finance searches. Kathy was a teacher and consultant in school systems in Massachusetts prior to entering executive search. She has a Bachelors degree in Communications and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Boston University.
