“Year of Elections and Foreign Policy” at SAIS
SAIS is examining the interplay between elections and foreign policy as a special substantive theme for this academic year. The “Year of Elections and Foreign Policy” coincides with the upcoming U.S. presidential elections as well as dozens of significant presidential and parliamentary elections recently completed or soon to be held around the world. SAIS and the Institute of Politics (IOP) at Harvard’s Kennedy School held a forum, “The 2008 Elections: Tracking the Youth Vote,” on Thursday, April 24. Panelists included former Iowa Congressman James A. Leach, IOP director and SAIS graduate; John Della Volpe, IOP polling director; Jon Gould, IOP survey co-chair and Harvard student; and David M. Lampton (moderator), SAIS dean of faculty and director of the China Studies Program.

U.S. Embassy Hosts SAIS Bologna Center for Mock U.S. Presidential Debate on April 18

The SAIS Bologna Center and the U.S. Embassy in Rome hosted a mock U.S. presidential debate on Friday, April 18, at the embassy. Erik Jones, professor of European studies at the Bologna Center, played the part of the Democratic candidates and Bart Drakulich, the center's director of finance and administration, played the role of the Republican candidate for an audience of Italian university students. Steven Anderson from the embassy's political section moderated the debate, and Ambassador Ronald Spogli gave welcoming remarks (in Italian).

The SAIS Dialogue Project and Women's Learning Partnership (WLP) hosted a forum entitled,"The Politics of Participation: Women and Transformative Leadership," on Thursday, April 3. Panelists included Masuma Hasan (Pakistan); Tolekan Ismailova (Kyrgyzstan); Aminetou Mint El Mokhtar (Mauritania); Malena de Montis (Nicaragua); Chibogu Obinwa (Nigeria); Rose Shomali (Palestine); Mahnaz Afkhami (moderator); Zainah Anwar (introducer); and Azar Nafisi (introducer), author of Reading Lolita in Tehran and director of the SAIS Dialogue Project.

Ron Paul, Republican congressman from Texas and a 2008 presidential candidate, spoke at SAIS on Tuesday, September 11 about "A Traditional Non-Intervention Foreign Policy." CPFR director Robert Guttman and Andrew Ward, the Financial Times White House correspondent, moderated the Q&A session following Paul's remarks.
