Hanspeter Kriesi holds the Stein Rokkan Chair in Comparative Politics at the European University Institute in Florence. Previously, he taught at the universities of Amsterdam, Geneva and Zurich. His wide ranging research interests include the study of various aspects of democracy, political communication, political mobilization and opinion formation. He has co-edited (together with David Snow and Sarah Soule) The Blackwell Companion to Social Movements (2004). His recent books include (together with Edgar Grande and colleagues) Political Conflict in Western Europe (2012) and West European Politics in the Age of Globalization (2008), as well as (together with a group of colleagues at the University of Zurich) Political communication in direct democratic campaigns (2012). His articles have appeared in major journals such as American Journal of Sociology, American Political Science Review, British Journal of Political Science, European Journal of Political Research, European Political Science Review, Politische Vierteljahresschrift, West European Politics. He was the director of a Swiss national research program on the "Challenges to democracy in the 21st century" from 2005-2012.
