Overview Global, regional and non-governmental organizations have been playing an increasing role in the international arena since the end of the Cold War. The end of the competition between the USA and the USSR has allowed the United Nations to play a more substantial role and to intervene in a number of conflicts around the world. Regional organizations have also been able to focus on issues more important than East/West rivalry and have begun to multiply their efforts in Conflict Prevention. Non-governmental organizations have been proliferating and their activities multiplying as a result of the withdrawal of support from the USA or USSR in certain conflicts. Although it is still early to talk about a conflict management regime, the growing role of these diverse organizations deserves special attention, because these organizations contribute to the growth of regimes that set norms and rules of behavior to monitor international relations. In addition to providing links to a comprehensive collection of these organizations, this section will illustrate these activities and highlight some of the problems that came along with their increasing activities. |
