SAIS students from throughout the world have the opportunity to travel to Japan under the auspices of the Reischauer Center summer internship program. Since sending its first interns to Japan in 1984, the Center has arranged for over 100 students to work in Japanese and American organizations in Japan for ten weeks during the summer. The program allows interns to cultivate their Japanese-language proficiency, develop professional working skills, and enhance their cultural understanding of Japan. Students who have sufficient Japanese language skills, a desire to be immersed in a Japanese work environment, and acceptable grades are encouraged to apply for the summer internship. Successful applicants are provided with support for airfare to Japan, housing assistance and, in many cases, stipends to defray local expenses. The current list of hosts is divided into four categories: - communications/newspapers
- corporations and financial institutions
- research organizations
- government-related institutions
