Global Energy and Environment Initiative (GEEI) | Expert Study Groups

GEEI convenes Expert Study Groups to address rapidly developing issues or issues that are characterized by a strong range of viewpoints. In the former case, such expert groups can quickly issue a paper that is very timely as issues are evolving. In the latter case, the Expert Study Groups seek to identify the rationale behind the range of viewpoints, and, where possible, to identify common ground on policies to move forward.

GEEI Policy Review Panel on Reprocessing and Recycling Spent Nuclear Reactor Fuel

To contribute to the national discussion of whether the United States should pursue recycling of spent nuclear fuel and, if so, in what manner this should be done, the Global Energy and Environment Initiative launched its Policy Review Panel on Reprocessing and Recycling Nuclear Spent Nuclear Reactor Fuel in December 2009. The PRP is charged to understand the technical aspects of this complex issue, but to focus most attention on identifying the national and foreign policy considerations associated with recycling spent nuclear fuel.  The PRP also will consider the relevant issues surrounding various options for spent fuel and high level waste short- and long-term storage.  The PRP’s goal is to make informed recommendations to the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future, which the Obama Administration created in January 2010 to investigate how to deal with spent nuclear fuel.  Furthermore, the PRP’s report will inform Congress as it considers the Department of Energy’s Fiscal Year 2011 budget request.

The panel is composed of 16 members who have a wide range of expertise and experience in nuclear issues.  Upon completion, the panel will have met on three separate occasions to review its discoveries and discuss its conclusions and recommendations.

The panel expects to disseminate a final report of its findings in late March of 2010.
