Global Theory and History

The Global Theory and History Program examines continuity and change in the formation and maturation of territorially focused relations, along with transnational forces and ideologies. The program includes the interplay of political economy, diplomatic and military strategies, and cultural civilizations.

Energy, Resources and Environment

The Energy, Resources and Environment (ERE) Program of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies is an interdisciplinary graduate program focused on developing innovative solutions to urgent global energy and environmental challenges.

Conflict Management

The Conflict Management Program focuses on mechanisms for handling international conflict, both between and within states, and developing cooperation. The program presents various theoretical approaches to understanding conflict and its causes, tools to manage conflicts, and the exploration of the formation and use of international organizations and regimes to mitigate conflict.

International Relations

International Relations (IR) is a broad field that allows concentration in specific programs for students wishing to specialize, and general training in the subject for students wishing to achieve a wider appreciation of international politics. It teaches students the critical use of concepts as a basis for understanding and analyzing international relations.

Western Hemisphere Studies

Western Hemisphere Studies (WHS) brings together the faculty and curriculum of the Canadian Studies Program (CSP) and the Latin American Studies Program (LASP) to offer students an integrated view and understanding of the dynamics of change in North and South America in the 21st century.

Asian Studies

Asian Studies is a broad field that provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the trends shaping Asia in the 21st century. Students in Asian Studies select a concentration in China, Japan, Korea, South Asia or Southeast Asia.

Latin American Studies

The largest of the two programs under Western Hemisphere Studies (WHS), the Latin American Studies Program (LASP) attracts between 60 and 80 students each year and enjoys a sizable presence in the SAIS Bologna Center. The Latin American Studies Program includes coursework in international economics/finance, U.S. foreign policy and international relations.

Canadian Studies

The Canadian Studies Program (CSP) examines Canada's trade, financial and commercial relations. The program also provides the perspective of unique political and cultural institutions, comparing the nation with other middle-sized open economies and industrial democracies.

Russian and Eurasian Studies

The Russian and Eurasian Studies (RES) Program prepares students to understand the turbulent developments in Russia and the other countries of the former Soviet Union. The enormous changes of the past two decades and the trends of the vast terrority continue to influence events in regions ranging from North America to East Asia.

Middle East Studies

The Middle East Studies Program offers a comprehensive approach to study of the region. It covers topics such as failing states, petrostates, political transitions, economic development, state-to-state conflict and nuclear proliferation, as well as religions, ethnicity and tribalism.
