Research Help

Research Librarians are available Monday through Friday, 9 am - 5 pm. Appointments are welcome, but not necessary.

The Research Desk is located on the 6th floor of the Nitze Building, next to the Circulation Desk. Contact us at or 202-663-5900.

See our Orientations page for more details on research classes offered by the SAIS Librarians.

RefWorks is a “reference manager” that helps you store and organize citations, move them into your documents, and change citation style as needed.

New users:

To log in to new RefWorks choose “login from my institution.” The first time you log in, you’ll provide your Hopkins email address and fill out a short form. For subsequent logins, you’ll see the familiar JHED login screen.

Log in to New RefWorks

Existing users:

If you already use RefWorks, you can stick with the old version (now called Legacy RefWorks) through January 2018 or migrate to the new version using a link on the upper left in your RefWorks library.
Log in to Legacy RefWorks

For more information, check out our RefWorks guide.

Request Materials

If what you need is not available from Catalyst, the JHU Libraries catalog, you can request material from other libraries.

For books, the first step is Borrow Direct, where you can search and request books from partner universities. Expect delivery in 5 business days. If Borrow Direct does not have what you need, try Interlibrary Loan (ILL). For more information see our ILL Guide.

For journal articles not available via Johns Hopkins, you can go straight to ILL.

Want to recommend a book that the Library should own? Ask a Librarian to consider it.

Using the Library

Mason Library offers comprehensive library services to students, faculty and staff.

Access is limited to individuals with a valid Johns Hopkins University ID card or a valid Library visitor pass. A visitor's pass may be obtained if you are a:

  • JHU alumnus
  • Spouse / domestic partner / dependent of SAIS students, faculty or staff
  • JHU retiree

If you are eligible for a pass, please contact the Library Research Desk at or call 202-663-5901 between the hours of 9 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

A secure wireless network named "hopkins" is available to all current SAIS students, faculty, and staff. Use these set-up instructions or contact

We advise all SAIS affiliates to use the hopkins network, rather than JHGuestnet, as the latter does not give full access to JHU resources.

Printing from your laptop or mobile device

A one-time setup (PDF) is needed to configure your mobile device for printing. Printing fees:

Black and white: 7 cents for single or double sided
Color: single-sided: 20 cents, double-sided: 40 cents

Printing from a Library workstation

The Library has 23 workstations for student use. Just click Print, name your job and the double-sided print will appear on the printer/scanner/copier associated with that workstation. Alternate options (color, single-sided) are available.

Off-campus access to JHU Libraries' resources

For JHU-licensed databases, use the links provided via Library's website and you'll be directed to the JHED login screen. Enter your JHED ID and password for access.
