In the News: U.S. Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford JHU'80, '83 at SAIS Robert Ford JHU'80, '83, U.S. ambassador to Syria, spoke to an audience of alumni, students and faculty about his experiences in supporting the right of free speech and peaceful protest in Syria. Ford also shared his expectations for U.S.-Syria relations in the near and longer terms. Click here to see photos. Alumni News Highlight Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley '84 was sworn in as U.S. ambassador to Malta in October. Alison von Klemperer B'86, '89 received the 2011 Award for Extraordinary Service from the Institute of International Education (IIE)'s Scholar Rescue Fund. Alumni Book Shelf The Power of Music: Pioneering Discoveries in the New Science of Song (Walker & Company, May 2011) by Elena Mannes '67 takes a scientific and anthropological approach to exploring the transformative power of music. The book reveals the universality of music across cultures and time, considers why music is such an innate part of the human experience, and reveals its ubiquitous presence in everything from the rhythm of a baby's cries to the melodic sound of children's teasing.
