SAIS Mourns Passing of Ken Nottingham June 5, 2008 Dear SAIS Community, I am saddened to inform you that Ken Nottingham, our dear friend and SAIS Advisory Council member, passed away on May 20 at the age of 70 after suffering a stroke here in Washington. Ken, who received his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins before attending SAIS, provided us with more than 20 years of invaluable support and guidance as a member of SAIS’s Advisory Council. In 2004, he also joined JHU’s Board of Trustees, extending his tremendous devotion and wisdom to the entire university community. As a council member, Ken was extremely active, making it a priority to attend meetings, chair special committees and provide critical analysis. We truly benefited from the expertise that Ken developed during his nearly 40-year career at the global insurance corporation, American International Group (AIG), where he held numerous leadership roles around the world. Equally important was Ken’s sincere personalized interest in and commitment to our students and their professional goals. Each year he would come to campus to meet with students, providing them insights about his field and the importance of leadership. Ken also was a huge advocate of our students within AIG, helping many secure summer internships or full-time jobs. This commitment to SAIS must have been very evident to Ken’s professional colleagues. When he retired as executive vice president from AIG in 2006, the company chose to honor Ken by establishing a SAIS fellowship in his name. I had the great honor of being asked by Ken’s wife, Betsy, to speak at his memorial service held in Washington on May 28. You can access my remarks at the link below in case they are of interest. Ken will be very deeply missed at SAIS. Our hearts go out to Betsy, their son, Charles, and other family members.
