The Dutch Alumni Chapter invites you to a lively discussion, “Recession, Recovery and the Energy Market,” with Dr. Kenneth Keller, director of the Johns Hopkins Bologna Center, and Dr. Steven Fries, chief economist of Royal Dutch Shell, on Wednesday, February 17, at 7 p.m. Reconnect with fellow Amsterdam alumni while learning more about global trends in the energy market from two specialists. More than 126 SAIS alumni and friends gathered to hear Nick Thompson speak about his book, The Hawk and The Dove: Paul Nitze, George Kennan, and the History of the Cold War with fellow panelists Richard Perle, Resident Fellow, American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, Professor Michael Mandelbaum, Director of the American Foreign Policy Program and Professor Eliot Cohen, Director of the Strategic Studies Program and Director of the Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies in Kenney Auditorium. 

SAIS San Francisco Alumni Club Lecture
SAIS San Francisco Alumni and INSEAD Alumni attended for a lecture on “Tackling the Roots of the Financial Crisis” with Elena Panaritis ’95 as guest speaker.  The joint event will took place at Greenberg Traurig LLP.

Professor Fukuyama Met With Alumni in El Salvador
SAIS alumni attended Professor Francis Fukuyama’s lecture on Latin American democracy on Friday, January 8, at the Salvadoran Foundation for Economic and Social Development ( FUSADES) in San Salvador. Conversation continued that evening with a SAIS-sponsored happy hour and dinner at Hacienda Real, Km 8, Carretera Panamericana.
London Alumni Gathered With Professor Cohen
SAIS Alumni in London met on Wednesday, January 6, for a reception and a lecture, "Bush's Wars, Obama's Choices," with Eliot A. Cohen, director of Strategic Studies and former counsel of the U.S. Department of State during the Bush Administration.

Alumni in India joined Raimund Magis '97, Anit Mukherjee '05 and special visitors Professor Ruth Wedgwood and current students from the SAIS International Law Program on November 25 for good food and converstaion at The Living Room at Hauz Khas Village. NYC/JHU Event on Water and Health
The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health co-hosted a symposium with SAIS on "Water and Health: Global Issues and Our Shared Responsibilities" on Friday, November 13, at the New York Academy of Sciences in lower Manhattan. The symposium was followed by a reception with Erik Peterson '81, SAIS visiting scholar and senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Professor Emeritus William Zartman Visited Alumni in Ottawa
Professor Zartman met with SAIS alumni on Wednesday, November 4, for a discussion on "Alternate Ways of Looking at Negotiations" at the Burgundy Room of Chateau Laurier. 
Strategic Studies Reunion Dinner in Washington D.C.
Second annual SAIS Strategic Studies alumni dinner took place on Thursday, October 29, at the Willard InterContinental Hotel, 1401 Pennsylvania Ave., NW. Professor John McLaughlin ’66, Former CIA Acting Director, Discussed Berlin Wall in NYC
On Tuesday, October 27, SAIS Professor John McLaughlin '66, former CIA acting director and current SAIS senior research fellow at the Merrill Center for Strategic Studies, joined the SAIS New York Alumni Club to share memories of his involvement supporting the White House and State Department in the months preceding the fall of the Berlin Wall. Professor McLaughlin directed analytic works that foresaw the weakening of the satellite regimes. Dean Jessica Einhorn '70 welcomed the alumni and the reception was hosted by Jerry '66 and Karen de St. Paer at Morgan Stanley.

SAIS alumni gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, on Friday, October 16, at the Cuba Bar. Special thanks go to  Ceren Erdogan '06 for organizing the happy hour and reconnecting the SAIS community in Istanbul!
Shanghai Alumni Cocktail Reception
Ken Jarrett '89, and Jan Kiely, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center co-director, hosted a reception for JHU Alumni in Shanghai on Friday, October 16, at the Hilton Shanghai Hotel. The reception started with Ken Jarrett's presentation "Rubber Hits the Road: U.S. -China Trade Relations". Jarrett, former Consul General at the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai, currently consults with APCO Worldwide, Inc. as vice chairman for Greater China. SAISers in Bangkok reconnected with each other and Professor Karl Jackson, Director of Southeast Asia Studies Program, on Tuesday, October 13 at Aldo's Bistro. The event was coordinated by Phil Robertson '97, who has led the mjority of gatherings in Thailand for the last decade.
Professor Francis Fukuyama Moderated Alumni Panel on Development
Professor Fukuyama moderated a panel discussion on the "Changing Role for Development Professionals in Post-Conflict Resolution" on Tuesday, October 13, in Kenney Auditorium. Speakers included Stacia George '01, Office of Transition Initiatives, U.S. Agency for International Development; Ambassador John Herbst '74, Office for Reconstruction and Stabilization, U.S. Department of State; Quentin Hodgson '01, U.S. Department of Defense; Henriette Von Kaltenborn-Stachau, '96, Fragile States and Conflict-Affected Countries Group, The World Bank; and Paul Miller '87, Catholic Relief Services.

Professor Roett joined SAIS alumni at the Union Club in Boston on Friday, October 9, to lead a discussion on his recent research in Sino-Latin American relations. The title of his presentation was, “The Rise of China: Implications for Latin America and the U.S.”

Cocktail Reception in Beijing
JHU Alumni gathered in Beijing on Thursday, October 8, at the Renaissance Beijing Hotel. The reception included presentation by Zhu Min '91, Ph.D. '96, group executive vice president of the Bank of China. Quito Alumni Gathering
The SAIS and Fletcher Alumni Clubs of New York Hosted a Panel on Pakistan
The SAIS New York Alumni Club and Fletcher Club of New York presented a discussion on "Pakistan at the Epicenter, the War on Terrorism" on Thursday, September 10 at One Chase Manhattan Plaza in New York City. Panelists included Abdullah Hussein Haroon, permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, and Ambassador Wendy Chamberlin, president of the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C. Jehangir Khan, principal officer of the Department of Political Affairs at the U.N. Secretariat, served as moderator.
Dr. Charles Doran  Met SAIS Alumni in Toronto
Dr. Charles Doran, Director of the Canadian Studies Program discussed the state of the U.S.-Canadian relations with SAIS alumni in Toronto on September 3rd. The discussion took place over a casual dinner and  Mr. Lee McTaggart, Political-Economic Unit Chief Counsel from the U.S. Consulate in Toronto, also joined the conversation. Bologna Center alumni hosted their second “Amici di Bologna” reunion on June 6 at the Delegates Dining Room at UN headquarters in Manhattan. The event consisted of an academic panel, “Trans-Atlantic Relations Twenty Years After the Fall of the Berlin Wall,” featuring Professors Erik Jones, Vera Zamagni and Marco Cesa, with Bologna Director Ken Keller presiding followed by a rooftop reception.

The Kosovo Alumni Group met at Tiffany's restaurant in Pristina, Kosovo, May 12. This event celebrates the first of many planned by the recently formed Kosovo Alumni Group. The class of 2007 returned to Kenney Auditorium and the SAIS Courtyard for the last happy hour of the semester Friday, May 1. Views and SAIS stories were exchanged over foreign and local beers to the great amusement of all.

Dr. Roett in Madrid
Professor Roett, Director of Western Hemisphere Studies and the Latin American Studies Program, discussed his new book, China's Expansion into Latin America: Implications for US Foreign Policy? with Madrid alumni and prospective students on Tuesday, April 21. Roett's book traces China's growing expansion into Latin America and what it means for U.S. interests and policy. The presentation was held at the IE Business School and Dr. Keller, Director of the SAIS Bologna Center, was in attendance.

Class of 2004 Happy Hour in DC
Jason DeRosa, John Juech, Ben Hengst and Michael Metzler gathered the Class of '04 on Friday, April 3 for a happy hour and mini-reunion. The Class of '04 had the opportunity to mix and mingle with current students while bringing their own flavor to the SAIS Happy Hour Friday night tradition.

Professor Cohen, Counselor to the United States Department of State under Secretary Condoleeza Rice from 2007 to 2009, regaled the SAIS New York Alumni Club with his talk, "What the Professor Taught the Counselor, What the Counselor Taught the Professor." The reception and talk was held at Goldman Sachs, offering alumni and prospective students a chance to mingle.
San Francisco Talk and Dinner
Professor Ruth Wedgwood, director of the International Law and Organizations Program, discussed 'Obama's Opportunities: Putin, Proliferation, and Pakistan' March 26 at San Francisco's Marines' Memorial Club. Following Professor Wedgwood's talk, SAIS San Francisco alumni Josh Gold ’08 and Paul Oliva '92, met with the San Francisco SAIS Alumni Club for drinks and nibbles at Swig.
Washington DC MIPP Event
Master of International Public Policy (M.I.P.P.) alumni and current M.I.P.P. students bonded March 24 over shrimp and drinks at James Hoban's (Dupont Circle) in Washington DC. Organized by M.I.P.P candidate Michael Marriott '09, the event offered an informal forum in which students and alumni could share thoughts on returning to student life, transitioning to a new career  and finding different directions in their current fields. New York -- Careers In Transition Event
Alumni seized the opportunity to re-ignite their job search March 19 by acquiring new strategies from leading executive recruiters, Annie Levy, Managing Principal, Emerging Globe Group; Rossanna Figuera, CEO, The Talent Circle; and Leslie Hand '99, Senior Associate for Global Financial Services Practice, Heidrick & Struggles. The panel discussion followed a reception hosted by the SAIS New York Alumni Club in The Paramount Building in New York.
Washington DC's Annual Bologna Alumni Reception
Over two hundred Bologna alumni returned to SAIS March 17 to welcome Bologna Center Director Kenneth Keller and meet prospective SAIS students. Director Keller regaled the crowd with tales from the red city and introduced the Bologna Center's new prospective student video featuring the Center's faculty as well as Bologna students from '08 and '09. Marisa Lino, Director Keller's predecessor, and Meera Shankar, Director of Career Services Bologna, were also present.
Vancouver Alumni Event
Chambar was the chosen reunion site for the SAIS Vancouver alumni on Friday, March 6. A special thank you goes to Laurence Lemay '08 for organizing another successful evening where guests enjoyed good company, fine dining and stimulating conversation.
SAIS D.C. Career Fair
The February 27th Spring 2009 Career Fair drew SAIS alumni back for the day as new and old students were given the opportunity to swap professional advice and career prospect opportunities.

PhD Alumni Get Together in Washington DC
Ph.D. candidates, SAIS faculty and fellow alumni filled the Herter Room at SAIS, Washington DC on February 19th to enjoy a reception hosted by Professors Bruce Parrott, Francis Fukuyama, Peter Lewis and fellow alumni Michael Green '94, Henry Nau '73, Roy Norton '99, Michael Van Dusen '71, and Irene Wu '04. Alumni Are Connecting Worldwide!
From November '08 through January '09, alumni met in Rio de Janeiro with Professor Riordan Roett, with Professor Francis Fukuyama in The Hague and Paris and Professor Karl Jackson joined alumni in Jakarta and Beijing.
Boston Alumni Gathering
In addition to the Happy Hour, Bob Hildreth '75, hosted a book discussion at his home with scholar Azar Nafisi, the bestselling author of Reading Lolita in Tehran on January 22nd.  Almost fifty Boston area alumni gathered to hear Nafisi read from her latest book Things I've Been Silent About: Memories, among which were Jane Tierney '75, John Tierney '74, Matthew Breman '97 and Dr. Carmine Gorga '62.

In the historic Freedom Trail Room at the Union Oyster House, Boston's oldest restaurant, New England's SAIS alumni gathered on November 6, 2008 over drinks and seafood appetizers. Anna Ravvin '06, welcomed the intimate crowd. Enthusiasm for this event and others like it ran high with the possibility of starting a SAIS Boston Alumni Club discussed.

SAIS NY Alumni Club
On November 13, 2008 over 130 Alumni gathered at McKinsey and Company to hear Professor Michael Mandelbaum speak about the "Foreign Policy Agenda for the New Administration."? With a reception beforehand, alumni had a chance to catch-up and re-connect. Many expressed an interest in helping the NY Alumni Club with future programming, networking and fostering Club initiatives that will benefit SAIS students with careers and internships. Overall, the gathering generated a renewed sense of SAIS community spirit and rekindled friendships. A special thanks to Lee Kempler '91 for being such a gracious host.
Toronto Alumni Wrap-Up
A small but lively group of SAISers met in Toronto for drinks and dinner at the AKCO, Wine and Sushi Bar on October 23. Alumni from the Bologna, Nanjing and D.C. campuses were in attendance -- Courtney Brady, Robert Delaney, Jana Orac, David Peters, Laura Saenz, Colin White, Daniel Yang, and Paul Yeung. New acquaintances were made, and the group looks forward to getting together early in the new year.
