Many of our programs are co-sponsored with our SAIS Career Clubs and Academic Programs. Collaborating with the Career Clubs, Career Services coordinates employer visits and hosts representatives from different industries and organizations who share their “insider” insights and experiences with SAIS students. The trips and briefings provide a great opportunity to learn more about industry requirements and future career opportunities. Below is an overview of our programs and information on past events. Current students and registered alumni can find more information on current career events on SAISWorks. Events that are open to alumni and the general public can be found on the school calendar on the SAIS Insider Page. Note that not all events posted to the SAIS Calendar are open; attendance or RSVP requirements will be noted for each event. SAIS Career Course The Career Course is a result of the SAIS strategic plan adopted by the Advisory Council to "ensure that SAIS not only remains a leader, but also establishes a new standard for international affairs education in a challenging new era." The primary purpose of the career course is to help each student develop a personalized professional development plan that will map out goals and objectives for gaining experience and ultimately finding a job. In addition to the general orientation and online tutorials, the course includes four interactive sessions that review key concepts in the job search process and give students the opportunity to work together on fine-tuning key job-search strategies by researching a key employer, briefing other students interested in this sector and writing a targeted resume and cover letter. The final stage of the course will be an individual meeting with a Career Counselor to review each student's Professional Development Plan and career goals for the year. Throughout the academic year, Career Service staff host a variety of workshops to help students gain a competitive edge when searching for internships and employment opportunities. Workshops are designed to provide specific job search tools and skills, including resume writing, interviewing, networking and negotiating. Additional programs are designed for particular industry sectors. Career Panels Throughout the academic year, alumni participate in career-panel discussions sponsored in cooperation with Career Clubs. These discussions provide students with valuable sector information and insights about specific organizations and institutions. Professional Skills Courses Since 2006, Career Services has been coordinating a series of skills-based courses to provide students with added support in developing knowledge and expanding capabilities in areas identified by employers as essential for success. Industry practitioners support SAIS faculty in designing and delivering courses in a range of subject areas, including leadership development, financial analysis, grant-writing and negotiations. Career Fairs Twice a year, in the fall and spring, SAIS Career Services hosts a Career Fair which draws employers from the public, private and non-profit sectors. With over 70 employers participating each year, students have an opportunity to meet recruiters with a particular interest in SAIS talent. Career Treks The Career Services staff works with committees of SAIS students to organize sector-focused treks to New York, London, Beijing and other cities. Treks provide valuable opportunities for students to visit employer sites, hear alumni speak about their careers and gain insight into the hiring requirements of some of our top employers. Here are some samples of past treks: - New York Private Sector Treks- With the Wall Street recruiting season commencing early in the fall, Career Services and the SAIS Finance Career Club are organizing a Wall Street Trek in September. Additional treks targeting consulting, energy and other private sector employers are slated later in the semester.
- New York Non-Profit & Multilateral Trek- The January New York Career Trek is an annual career exploration and alumni networking program for SAIS students primarily interested in nonprofit employers and international organizations. Participating organizations have included: Trickle up Program, Council on Foreign Relations, Revenue Watch Institute, Human Rights Watch and the United Nations (secretariat).
- Asia Treks- Over the past two years SAIS Career Services has co-sponsored a January Career Trek with the China Studies Program and SAIS Nanjing Center. Participating organizations in Shanghai have included Deloitte, Citibank, Vincent and Elkins. Participating organizations in Hong Kong have included JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, and Sindicatum Carbon Technology.
- London and Brussels Treks- Several DC students have the opportunity to join several treks organized by our Bologna Center Career Services Office staff. They coordinate a Fall Finance Trek to London which has included visits to Barclays, ING, Morgan Stanley Investment Management U.K., Rogge Global Partners. They also coordinate Spring Policy and Business Trek to both Brussels and London which has included visits to Burson Marsteller, The European Commission (External Relations DG).

Employer Presentations and Site Visits Throughout the year, top SAIS employers host on-campus presentations to promote their organization, explain the recruitment process, and in most cases, collect resumes for open internships and full-time positions. Career Services also arranges site visits to local employers with a strong alumni base. These visits often include career panels that provide background on the variety of positions available, special topic presentations by senior alumni and recruiting presentations by human resources staff.
