Whether you are looking for help in your own job search or would like to help current students in their professional development, Career Services is here to work with you.  Below you will find an overview of both services and support, as well as links to more information on each of these areas.

How You Can Help

Alumni continue to be one of our key assets for Professional Development and Recruiting.  You know the curriculum, you recognize the quality of students and faculty here at SAIS, and you understand how this background fits into your own chosen profession.  Thank you for your continued interest in SAIS and for the assistance that you lend to our students.

Recruiting at SAIS
We welcome the opportunity to work with you individually to support you and your employer’s efforts to find high-quality candidates for both internships and employment after graduation.  We also appreciate the opportunity to meet any Human Resources or Graduate Recruiting staff members in your organization to set up a more formal recruiting relationship.  Below is a list of services we provide:

  • Internship and Job Posting – If you have an opportunity you would like to advertise to students, you can send the job posting with the description and contact information to saiscareer@jhu.edu; we will quickly post the announcement and it will automatically be e-mailed to students who have indicated special interest in your employer or field.
  • Resume Collections – We can also collect resumes online from candidates that meet your needs and send them to you as a PDF resume book.
  • Employer Presentations – Come to SAIS in person or virtually via video conferencing to tell students about where you work, explain the professional growth opportunities available through internships and jobs, as well as provide information on the application process.
  • Career Fair – Come to our Fall or Spring Career Fair to meet students and talk about your employer and collect resumes from interested students and alumni.
  • Register on SAISWorks – You can also register on SAISWorks and electronically manage all of the above items.  Please contact Janet Burrowes,  jburrowes@jhu.edu or go here to register.

Support Professional Development
Alumni are a wonderful resource to students for exploring fields, polishing their job-search skills or understanding the recruiting process.  Many alumni direct their help through our Career Clubs, which co-sponsor many of the events listed below.   Click here if you would like to learn more about the clubs, their programming and how they impact professional development.  Below is a list of ways that you can get involved:

  • Career Panels – Talk about your career with a group of other professionals to give an overview of the field or to provide a deeper understanding of the diverse work within a particular organization.
  • Brown Bags – Meet informally over breakfast or lunch to discuss your career and provide feedback to a smaller group of students on their interest in your field.
  • Topic Presentations – If you would like to speak on a specific professional development topic or subject, e-mail  careerservicesweb@jhu.edu to let us know more about it.
  • Career Treks – Help us coordinate alumni panels and employer visits for a group of students in your city or region.
  • Employer Site Visits – Host a group of students at your place of employment. Arrange for them to meet with a group of alumni and human resources staff.
  • Informational Interviews – Meet one-on-one with students to talk more in depth about your career path and provide specific feedback on how a student’s interest and background would fit into your field.
  • Mock Interviews – Help students practice specific interview skills.  We would be happy to organize sessions in our office, help connect students electronically, or send students to you.

Overview of General Alumni Services

Professional Development is an ongoing process that includes both special resources and a good plan.  As a graduate of SAIS, you have a variety of services and resources to help you with your search, in addition to a strong alumni network.   All alumni can take advantage of the following:

  •  Job Search Resources – A full list of open resources to utilize in your job search.
  •  InCircle- A JHU-wide database of alumni.
  • Career Development Events – Career Services and Career Clubs host a variety of career related events throughout the year.  For more information on upcoming events open to all alumni, please go to the Insider Page.

Registered Alumni Services

For alumni making a career transition or needing to reassess their career options, registering on SAISWorks, our online career management system, will expand your resources and services.   In addition to the resources noted above, registering provides alumni with:

  • Jobs Database – Gain access to a variety of jobs, for both mid- and advanced-level candidates at some of SAIS’s top employers; this also includes the ability to set up search agents that automatically e-mail a user-defined list of opportunities.
  • Event and Programming RSVPs – In addition to events open to all alumni, some special events are RSVP only.  Alumni must be registered on SAISWorks to attend; preference is always given to current students.  Note that a limited number of events are for students only, which will be noted in the event description.
  • Skills Courses – Career Services Offers a variety of skills courses for current students. If space is still available at the close of skills-course registration, alumni registered on SAISWorks may sign-up for the courses.
  • Counseling Meeting – If you are in the DC area, you can schedule a meeting with a counselor to review your job-search strategy, update your resume, or obtain contacts at employers of interest; additional follow up meetings can also be planned if recommended by the counselor.
