There is certain basic information you may want to know before requesting a SAIS catalog & application:

  1. M.A. : The primary degree offered at SAIS is a full-time, two-year M.A. Degree in International Relations. Approximately 200 students (135 in Washington and 65 in Bologna) begin the M.A. program each fall. SAIS campuses are located in Washington DC; Bologna, Italy (M.A. coursework, all instruction in English); and Nanjing, China (certificate coursework, which can count toward a joint MA-Nanjing degree, instruction in Chinese).
  2. M.I.P.P. : SAIS also offers a one-year (eight courses) Masters of International Public Policy degree for mid-career professionals. To apply you must have nine years of professional experience in positions of increasingly responsibility, preferably in a career related to international affairs or business. Approximately 25 M.I.P.P. students begin each fall, typically in Washington DC, but also occasionally in Bologna.
  3. Ph.D. : SAIS also offers a Ph.D. program to a small number of students in certain SAIS fields. Applicants must be nominated by a SAIS field director, and must have completed the SAIS M.A. or a similar M.A. in International Relations or Political Science. Approximately five new Ph.D. students begin each fall.
