SAIS offers a unique sense of community in one of the most vibrant intellectual, political and economic centers of the United States. Located in an historic business and residential area of the District of Columbia’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, SAIS is within walking distance of federal offices, international organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, embassies, research institutions, multinational corporations and numerous shops and restaurants.

As a small graduate school, SAIS fosters close relationships among peers and between students and faculty. Its many public forums and activities encourage a spirited intellectual life and congenial social environment, where students have frequent opportunities to meet leaders in international politics and business.

The Student Body

SAIS students represent a range of cultural and academic backgrounds.

Members of the M.A. program come from more than 200 U.S. colleges and universities and more than 70 countries. Seventy percent of entering M.A. students have worked or studied abroad, and more than 85 percent have significant professional experience in government, grassroots development, journalism, nonprofit organizations, research firms, banking, the military or multinational corporations.

The approximately 55 mid-career professionals who enroll in the M.I.P.P. program each year enrich the SAIS community with their impressive records of accomplishment and areas of expertise in international affairs and other fields.

Women account for half the student body, and more than 20 percent of students who are U.S. citizens are ethnic minorities.  About 40 percent of students are non-U.S. citizens.

Student Publications

SAIS Review offers students the opportunity to participate in producing a leading journal of international affairs. Published twice a year, the Review contains articles and book reviews on foreign policy and international economics by distinguished experts, faculty and students. Each year, SAIS students serve as editor in chief, managing editor and book review editor. Students interested in journalism, scholarly publications and international issues are encouraged to join the Review’s editorial and business staff or to submit articles and reviews.

The SAIS Observer, the student newspaper, offers a forum for students to express their views on international and domestic political, economic and cultural issues.

Perspectives is a student-edited newsletter produced by the International Development Program. The publication focuses on development topics from both global and local perspectives.

Student Housing

SAIS has no residence facilities. Students are responsible for finding their own accommodations in the Washington, D.C., area.  Most SAIS students live in studios or shared apartments in Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan and other neighborhoods within walking distance of the school.  For those who wish to live in nearby Maryland and Northern Virginia, public transportation offers convenient access to SAIS from those communities.  Incoming students should secure housing before arriving. For a list of housing resources, visit www.sais-jhu.edu/housing.
