Applying to SAIS | Reapplications and Deferrals

REAPPLICATION
Reapplication is the process undertaken by applicants who were not offered admission or chose not to accept an offer of admission in a previous application cycle and have decided to apply again.

Applicants must wait one year before reapplying. For example: An applicant who applied but was not offered admission for Fall 2008 can reapply for Fall 2009, but not for Spring 2009.

HOW TO REAPPLY:
To reapply for admission to SAIS, request the standard SAIS application package and follow the instructions below to determine which materials to submit to the SAIS Admissions Office.  A cover letter should be included that briefly and clearly states that you are reapplying and indicates the year and semester for which your previous application was submitted. Reapplication materials must be received in keeping with respective application deadlines.

Required for Reapplication :

  1. Application Fee
  2. Application Form
  3. Two Essays
  4. Resume

Optional for Reapplication :
If you are reapplying to SAIS within two years of submitting a previous application, you may request that previously submitted copies of the following items be reused. Please use the Checklist to note any such requests at the time of your reapplication.

  1. Transcripts
  2. GRE, GMAT or TOEFL scores
  3. Letters of Recommendation

DEFERRAL PROCEDURES:
Deferrals are granted only if an unforeseen circumstance prevents you from attending SAIS during the semester for which you applied.  Spring applicants and applicants admitted from the wait list are not eligible for deferrals.

If you have been admitted for Fall 2008 and wish to request a deferral, you will need to submit a Request for Deferral Form to the SAIS Admissions Office via fax or hard copy by April 18, 2008.  Please make sure to fill out all sections of the form to ensure full consideration of your deferral request. Please note that all deferred students are reconsidered for fellowship awards for the semester in which they enroll, but it is unlikely that the amount of your award will differ from your previous offer.

If your request for deferral is denied and you would still like to enroll in the Fall 2008, you must accept your offer of admission no later than your original response deadline.

If your request for deferral is approved, you must return your Candidate’s Reply Form with a non-refundable $1000 deferral fee that will be credited to your first semester’s tuition at the time of enrollment.

After you are approved for deferral, you will need to confirm your intent to enroll with the payment of an additional one-time $500 non-refundable matriculation fee before the following deadlines:

November 1, 2008  for Spring 2009

January 15, 2009  for Fall 2009

Please choose the appropriate form below to complete and submit with your matriculation fee in keeping with the above deadlines.

Returning from deferral: SAIS-Washington, DC campus
Returning from deferral: SAIS-Bologna, Italy campus

Please note that since our applicant pool is very mobile, we cannot accept responsibility for reminding you of these deadlines. If the confirmation of your intent to enroll, along with the matriculation deposit, does not arrive before the deadlines, we will assume that you have decided not to enroll.  You will forfeit your place in the class and your deferral deposit. If you do enroll, the deferral deposit will be credited toward your first semester's tuition.

FINANCIAL AID:
Financial aid awards are reconsidered for the semester in which the applicant will be enrolling. Previous financial aid decisions do not carry over through the reapplication processes. while previous financial aid decisions are not guaranteed, we do attempt to retain the same amount of aid for deferred students.  Awards rarely increase.
