Western Hemisphere Studies Overview | Faculty & Staff

WHS Faculty

The core faculty is known for its scholarly accomplishments, regional expertise and contributions to key policy debates.

Dr. Riordan Roett - Sarita and Don Johnston Professor, and Director, Western Hemisphere Studies as well as the Latin American Studies Program­.  Areas of spe­cialization include Mexico, the Southern Cone, and U.S.-Latin American relations.  Dr. Roett is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations as well as a member of the Board of Directors of several closed-end funds in New York.

Dr. Charles Doran - Andrew Mellon Professor, International Relations, and Director, Center of Canadian Studies.  Areas of specialization include Canadian domestic and foreign affairs, North American and Western Hemispheric integration, energy policy, and general international relations.  He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Atlantic Council Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, and the North American Committee.

Dr. Francisco E. González - Riordan Roett Associate Professor, Latin American Studies. Area of specialization include, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Argentina, Chile, Emerging Markets, Newly Industrialized Countries, and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).  Dr. González was the recipient of the  "Excellence in Teaching Award" at the 2006 SAIS commencement.

Dr. Tamara Woroby - Affiliate Professor.  Also, Professor of Economics, Towson University (University of Maryland System).

Dr. Dorothy Sobol - Research Professor and Coordinator of the Emerging Markets Specialization. Former Vice President, Research and Market Analysis Group, Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Professorial Lecturers

Holding positions in international organizations, governmental agencies, and other universities, professorial lecturers bring their expertise into the classroom.

Dr. Mila Freire - Regional Advisor, Latin American and the Caribbean Region, World Bank

Dr. Jacqueline Mazza - Social Sector Specialist, Inter-American Development Bank
