SAIS-DiTella University Student Exchange Program in Buenos Aires

Eligible SAIS students may apply for a semester abroad (Fall) at Torcuato Di Tella University (UTDT) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This program provides a unique regional exchange opportunity through which students can broaden their academic experience through the Di Tella curriculum, improve their Spanish skills through immersion, and experience living, working, and studying in Latin America.

Courses will count toward the SAIS M.A. degree as follows: Latin America-related courses will count toward the LASP concentration, and all other courses will count as electives toward fulfilling the 16-course requirement to complete the SAIS M.A. and not toward any other SAIS requirements.  If approved by the SAIS economics program director, economics courses may count toward fulfilling the SAIS economics requirements beyond the core courses of microeconomics, macroeconomics, monetary and trade (these courses must be taken at SAIS).

Exchange students register and pay tuition and other required fees at their home institution (that is, SAIS students pay SAIS tuition and fees during their semester abroad) and must take an equivalent course load at UTDT consistent with their SAIS academic concentration and general requirements. SAIS students may attend UTDT for one semester--in the Fall--typically their third semester of the M.A. program.  It is highly recommended that all M.A. students spend a minimum of two semesters in the SAIS-Washington campus, an important consideration applicable to Bologna students.

Full oral and written Spanish language proficiency is required.  The minimum level to qualify for the exchange program is Superior.

Applicants should submit (1) a short essay (1 to 2 pages) describing how the exchange program will advance their career/education goals; (2) a proposed course list for their semester at UTDT; and (3) the applicant’s short CV. A selection committee will review the applications, and selected students will be notified within two weeks.

Application deadline: March 1. The exchange program is limited to five SAIS M.A. students per calendar year. Submit applications to SAIS Western Hemisphere Studies/LASP, Attention: Guadalupe Paz, SAIS-Washington, Nitze 518.

For information on UTDT (faculty, courses, etc.), visit their Web site at www.utdt.edu, or contact Guadalupe Paz at gpaz@jhu.edu.

If you are a Di Tella Student interested in studying at SAIS for a semester please contact the coordinator of the Maestria en Estudios Internacionales (MEI) at Di Tella University.

UTDT Master’s in International Relations Program

The Master’s in International Relations (MIR) at the Torcuato Di Tella University (UTDT) is a highly demanding and rigorous two-year program that equips future practitioners and analysts with the conceptual framework and skills they will need to be successful in the field of International Relations. Specifically, the MIR has been designed for students who want to prepare themselves as leaders in regional and global affairs and for positions as international policy managers in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

The University

The Torcuato Di Tella Institute (ITDT, 1958) has opened avenues for research and teaching in the Argentine social sciences. The ITDT has contributed to the education of various generations of professionals who have become prominent in the field of social and economic sciences. The research centers of the ITDT have published more than 300 titles and their researchers are among the most notable of the country in their respective disciplines.

The Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (UTDT) is a private non-profit institution founded in 1991 by the Di Tella Foundation and the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella, with support from the international philanthropic community. The mission of the University―which opened its doors on March 11, 1992―is to educate new generations of academic, social, political and business leaders, and to enhance research and scholarship in the arts and sciences.

The University is organized in schools, centers, and departments, with graduate and undergraduate programs in humanities and social sciences. There are nine academic units: Architecture, Business Economics, Economics, Education, Government, History, Law, Mathematics and Statistics and Political Science and Government. The University offers undergraduate degrees in Economics, Business Economics, History, International Relations, Political Science and Law. It also offers MA degrees in Business Administration, Economics, Education Administration, Finance, International Relations, History, Law and Economics, Non-profit Organizations Public Policy, and Urban Economics.  Two Ph.D. degrees have recently been added in Economics and History.

UTDT offers weekly workshops in economics, political science, business economics, international affairs, contemporary architecture, writing and literary criticism, and in legal philosophy.

Enrollment in 2001 was 1100 undergraduate and 500 graduate students.  The faculty consists of 54 full time professors (10 at the Instituto Di Tella, 3 with endowed chairs) and 25 visiting professors. The student-faculty ratio is 16 to 1 (10-1 when including visiting professors). Many faculty members have joint appointments with U.S. universities, including Chicago, Columbia, Maryland, Rochester, and NYU.  UTDT is a highly regarded Research University in Latin America.

The Faculty

The professors of the Master’s in International Relations are highly qualified professionals, who combine a first level academic formation with a practical experience in the area of International Relations.  Half of the faculty consists of renowned full-time UTDT research professors and the remaining half by diplomats and officials from international organizations, as well as visiting professors from prestigious foreign academic institutions.

Resources

Library: The UTDT library, founded in 1958, is the most valuable library devoted to the social sciences in Argentina. Its 65.000 volumes are classified by a system of processing and recuperation of information programmed by the UNESCO. The library also allows access through Internet to the most important foreign bibliographic collections.

Computer Center: it is integrated by a network of personal computers equipped with the main market, data base, statistical and econometric software programs. It provides e-mail services, and is connected to Internet. Training courses are permanently available and help is provided for professors, researchers and students.
