Daniel Marks

A 2005 graduate of Grinnell College, Danny earned his undergraduate degree in international relations.  His interest in international affairs developed from his studies and extensive travels.  He wrote his senior thesis on the dehumanization techniques used by the perpetrators of genocide and suggested policies to prevent dehumanization in the future.

Immediately after graduating, Danny worked for Sunbelt Asia in Bangkok, Thailand as a consultant.  His work consisted of giving legal advice to foreigners on how to set up and manage companies, acquire visas and work permits and file corporate taxes.  After a year at Sunbelt, he spent another one as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, taking courses in Peace Studies at a local university and giving presentations about his previous research.

In his first year of study at SAIS, Danny took numerous courses in Southeast Asia Studies, including Domestic Politics of Southeast Asia, Politics of Indochina and Contemporary Philippine Politics and Society.  These courses plus his economics one were very useful during this summer when he interned at the Bangkok office of APCO Worldwide, a public affairs company.

Now in his second year, he is working toward his M.A. in International Relations with a concentration in Southeast Asia Studies. He hopes to take full advantage of the excellent academic and work experience offered at SAIS to prepare him for a career in either diplomacy or the private sector in Southeast Asia.
