Southeast Asia Studies | M.A. Degree Requirements

Candidates for the M.A. degree in the Southeast Asia Studies Program must complete the general requirements for all SAIS M.A. students. These include the passage of two core examinations and six courses in international economics. These requirements can be found by clicking here: SAIS M.A. Requirements.

The requirements specific to the Southeast Asia Studies Program are as follows:

  • Four Southeast Asia Studies courses;
  • Two other Asian Studies courses;
  • Passage of both the oral and written portions of the Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese language proficiency examination;
  • Passage of an oral examination on Southeast Asia, taken in conjunction with the oral examination in international economics.
