Both M.A. and Ph.D. candidates are required to demonstrate Intermediate High proficiency in understanding, speaking, and reading a South Asian language. As a rough guide, the requirement translates into two years of prior or present language study. Currently, Hindi is offered in a proficiency track at SAIS. The Language Studies Program provides classes that assist students to meet their language requirements successfully. The Hindi language program at SAIS offers a sequence of four courses at the Novice and Intermediate levels. At the Novice level, students develop speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills that are vital to performing real-life communication tasks successfully. At the Intermediate level, students develop ease and confidence in dealing with routine tasks and narrating in major time frames, along with more specialized vocabulary appropriate to their interests and areas of professional competence. Starting in Fall 2006, students in the Hindi program will learn both Hindi and Urdu scripts.
