November 2005

Ahmed Rashid, author of two best-selling books, Taliban and Jihad--The Rise of Militant Islam in Central Asia, gave a lecture on "The Political Consequences of Natural Disaster: South Asia after the Earthquake" on November 18, 2005 at 5:30pm, at the Bernstein Offit Auditorium, 1717 Mass Ave. The lecture was followed by a reception from 7:00-8:00pm.

Relief Fundraiser for Earthquake Victims in India and Pakistan hosted by  by The Committee for Global Relief and South Asia Studies, was held at the World Bank Atrium, 1818 H Street NW, on November 10, 2005, from 7-9pm.  Special guests included members of the US Senate and House of Representatives.  The event was chaired by Dr. Jessica Einhorn, Dean of SAIS.

On September 28, 2005, Christophe Jaffrelot, Director of the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales (CERI) in Paris, gave a seminar on "Does the Sangh Parivar Still Exist: The BJP, RSS and VHP Today" from 12:30-2pm, in Rome 806.

On September 23, 2005, Ambassador Robert Blackwill gave a lunchtime seminar on "The Rise of India as a Great Power" from 12-1:15pm in the Rome Auditorium. 

On September 20, 2005 Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, the American Indian Foundation and SAIS presented a seminar entitled "Social Entrepreneurship and India: Innovations in Healthcare and Education," from 6-7:30pm, 1717 Mass Ave, Room 500.

On September 19, 2005, Dr. Pratap Mehta of the Center for Policy Research in New Delhi, gave a lunchtime seminar entitled "Clash of the Titans? The Coming Conflict Between the Executive and the Judiciary in India" from 12:30-2pm in Rome 806.

On March 12, 2005, Pakistan's Minister of Education, Javed Ashraf, gave a presentation on "The Challenges of the Education Sector In Pakistan" which we co-sponsored with the Asia Program of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars from 10-11:30am.  Click here for his powerpoint presentation.

On March 9, 2005, Frederick Grare, Counselor at the Embassy of France in Islamabad, will give a lunchtime seminar on "The Afghanistan-Pakistan Relationship: Local Dimensions of A Global Conflict" from 12:30-2pm in Rome 812.

On March 11, 2005, P. Sainath, India's leading journalist on poverty and social justice gave a lunchtime seminar on "The Globalization of Inequality: Farmer Suicides in India" from 12:30-2pm in Rome 806.  Also, his photo exhibit, "Visible Work, Invisible Women" will be on display at SAIS in the Nitze lobby from Friday March 11-Friday March 18th.
