Announcement: The Latin American Studies Program will offer two study trips during the 2008-2009 academic year: Costa Rica (November 2008) and China (March 2009).
Only SAIS/Western Hemisphere students are eligible to participate in these trips, and participants will be chosen by a competitive selection process. A selection panel will review applications and conduct applicant interviews to determine commitment and applicability of the study trip to students' interests and career goals.
International Study Trips 2008 China Through a generous grant from the STARR Foundation, fifteen LASP students from both the D.C. and Bologna campuses traveled to Shanghai and Beijing in March 2008. With a dual focus on Chinese interests in Latin American economies and opportunities for Latin American economies in China, the study trip included 18 meetings with leaders in the business, finance, and energy sectors, as well as representatives from Latin American embassies in China and international organizations, academics and journalists. Kellogg Foundation Mexico, six SAIS LASP students studied underdevelopment and poverty in January 2008, by visiting organizations in Chiapas and Mexico City that work on indigenous issues and on issues associated with immigration in southern Mexico.
