Latin American Studies | M.A. Academic Requirements

Core Exams

* It is strongly encouraged that the core requirement be met by the end of the second semester.

Students must pass two of the following four core examinations: Comparative National Systems (100.750); American Foreign Policy Since World War II (100.720); Theories of International Relations (100.761), and Evolution of the International System (100.771)

  1. Microeconomics (300.700)*
  2. Macroeconomics (300.701)*
  3. International Trade Theory (300.707) Core
  4. International Monetary Theory (300.708) Core
  5. International Economics Elective

* Either take and pass course or waive course through placement test

** Students waiving Microeconomics and Macroeconomics must take at least 2 elective Economics courses, in addition to the 2 Economics core courses. Students taking Microeconomics and Macroeconomics must take a total of 6 Economics courses

Latin American Studies Program (LASP) Requirements:

All LASP students must pass the Latin American History Exam, preferably during their first semester. 

  1. Western Hemisphere Studies core course: Theory and Practice of Politics in Latin America (810.700)
  2. Canadian Studies Course 
  3. LASP course
  4. LASP course
  5. LASP course
  6. LASP course

Electives (MA Students must take a total of at least 16 non-language courses)

*All the courses listed above, except for language courses, count toward the fulfillment of the 16-course requirement.
