Latin American Studies | Associate Professor Francisco E. González

Biographical Profile

Dr. Francisco E. González is the Riordan Roett Associate Professor of Latin American Studies at The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).  Professor González began teaching at SAIS in 2002, when he became a Professorial Lecturer in Latin American Political Economy at the school’s Bologna Center, while serving as a full-time junior faculty member in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford University, commuting fortnightly between Oxford and Bologna.  In 2005, Dr. González and his family relocated to Washington, DC, where he was invited to occupy the newly established Riordan Roett Chair in Latin American Studies at SAIS’s main campus. After completing his first year as the Riordan Roett Professor, Dr. González received the Excellence in Teaching award at the 2006 SAIS Commencement ceremony.  As a British Academy Post-doctoral Fellow (2002–2005), Professor González held the position of junior research fellow at Oxford’s Nuffield College.  Prior to that (2000–2002), he was a Stipendary Lecturer in Politics at St. John’s College at Oxford University.

Professor González’s early research focused on contemporary dual transitions (economic and political: from relatively closed to open economies and from authoritarian to democratic regimes) in Latin America, as well as on the growing influence of the Hispanic/Latino community in the politics of the United States. His current research focuses on energy issues in the Americas and the political impacts of the worst financial and economic crises of the twentieth century in the Southern Cone countries.  His second book Creative Destruction? Economic Crises and Latin America was published by JHU Press in May 2012.  He is also the author of Dual Transitions from Authoritarian Rule: Institutionalized Regimes in Chile and Mexico, 1970–2000 (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2008), which was selected as a 2008 Outstanding Academic Title by Choice magazine.  Dr. González is also the author of more than twenty academic articles in peer-reviewed journals, policy magazines and edited books.  He is a regular participant in commentary shows on CNN en Español, Voice of America, Al Jazeera International, and the Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network (HITN).

Dr. González earned his master’s (MPhil, 1997) and doctoral (DPhil, 2002) degrees in Politics from the University of Oxford, and his BA in Politics and Public Administration from El Colegio de México (1995).
