Latin American Studies |   Program Activities

Internships/Research Fellowships
One of the most popular components of LASP is our Internship/ Research Fellowship Program in Latin America.  Each summer between 15 and 25 students are placed in the region; the placements are as diverse as the participating students as we work closely with concentrators to identify organizations of particular interest.  Students may also apply for grants to carry out individual research projects in Latin America.  The application process is competitive; detailed application guidelines are distributed during the fall semester.  Bologna WHS students are eligible to apply.

International Study Trips
During the 2008-2009 Academic Year, the Latin American Studies Program sponsored international study trips to Costa Rica and China.  In addition, the Center for Canadian Studies sponsored a trip to the oil sands in Alberta to which Latin American Studies Program students were eligible to participate.

Samuel Z. Stone WHS Seminar Series
The “Samuel Z. Stone Seminars” are a series of informal lectures given by business professionals, academics, diplomats, and Latin American policy specialists on varied topics of interest. The sessions are an integral part of the program, and students are expected to attend.

Alumni Networking
With our very extensive alumni network, current students are regularly connected with LASP alumni for recruiting purposes, job advice and/or social networking both in and outside of the U.S.  Alumni are invited back to LASP events, annual program updates are distributed, and personal meetings between alumni and LASP faculty and staff keep our alumni network alive.

Tertulias/Bate-Papos
Students join native Spanish- and/or Portuguese-speakers to discuss relevant topics of interest as well as to practice their conversational skills in these languages.

Wine and Cheese Receptions
WHS Director Riordan Roett welcomes program concentrators to his residence for a more informal gathering of students and staff.

Latin American Film Series
Interested students and WHS staff collaborate to organize a series of Latin American films that provide additional insight on cultural and historical issues in the region.
