Korea Studies | M.A. Academic Requirements

Since knowledge of Korea and Korean issues is strengthened by knowledge of the two economically large neighboring countries, China and Japan, the requirements for a Korean Studies major takes these neighbors into account. Students concentrating in Korean Studies are required to take three courses focused directly on Korea but also one course each from Japan Studies and China Studies and a sixth course from any of the other Asian Studies programs, including the Asia Regional course offerings.  All Korea Studies concentrators are also required to pass the Korean language proficiency examination. To summarize the requirement for Korea Studies concentrators:

  • Courses offered by Korean Studies - 3
  • Courses offered by China Studies - 1
  • Courses offered by Japan Studies - 1
  • Other Regional Asian IR Course: South or Southeast Asia - 1
  • Korean language proficiency
