Korea Studies Luncheons

Monthly Korea Studies Luncheons provide opportunities for members of the Korea Studies and Korean language programs to explore both academic topics related to Korea, Korean affairs, and current events, as well as practical issues, such as career and internship planning. In addition to the luncheons, Korea Studies also hosts monthly social events, where Korea Studies and Korean language students can engage fellow students, faculty and staff, in an informal setting.

Co-curricular Activities

Select Korea studies courses offer students the opportunity to enrich their classroom experience through class trips, publication opportunities, and conference participation.

Each fall semester, students in "The Two Koreas: Contemporary Research and Record" course travel to Korea on a research and fact checking trip. Past trips have included meetings with Blue House officials, Korean National Assemblymen/Assemblywomen, various Korean ministries, Korean NGO's, U.S. Korea Forces, and a wide range of Korean scholars. In Fall 2008, the class trip even included a one day visit to North Korea, near the Gaesung Industrial Complex. The findings from these trips are used to supplement student research papers, which are then compiled into a book and published online as the SAIS-U.S. Korea Yearbook.

Other class trips have included Professor John Merrill's, "Contemporary Korea in Historical Perspective" course, where students traveled to New York City to meet with delegations at the UN, the ROK Mission to the UN, Korea Society, and more.

Korea Studies courses are also supplemented by monthly Korea related events hosted by the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS. A wide range of events bring Washington policy experts, foreign diplomats and government officials, scholars, journalists, and businesspeople together with the SAIS community, allowing students to learn firsthand from practitioners about issues critical to the region.

Research Opportunities

Students in Korea Studies are encouraged to work as research assistants for Korea Studies faculty, as well as staff and Visiting Scholars at the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS. To inquire about current research opportunities, contact Nicole Baillis at nbaillis@jhu.edu.

Other Opportunities

Korea Studies students are encouraged to apply for Korea Studies Fellowships from the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS. Application procedures are announced every January, and applications usually are due to be submitted by mid-February.
