Background: Dr. Thayer received a Ph.D. with distinction in Political Science from Columbia University. He served in the State Department in Washington and in the US Embassies in Tokyo and Rangoon. He later served as the National Intelligence Officer for East Asia and the Pacific, the senior official in the intelligence community for this region. Professor Thayer has taught at Columbia University, the City University of New York, and one year as a visiting professor at Harvard University. He has been a Ford Foundation Fellow and an Abe Foundation Fellow.
