The China Studies Program will assist students in obtaining summer internships in China. The program is designed for first-year M.A. students in China Studies, but is open to others. China Studies will help identify internship opportunities in Greater China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei. Many internships require at least intermediate level Chinese, though some may not have any Chinese language requirement. We anticipate that there will be only a limited amount of financial assistance available from the China Studies program to help cover the costs of those internships that are not self-funding. We hope to provide a minimum of $1,200 to offset the costs of travel to and from China. Non-China Studies students can apply for financial aid earmarked for internships in Asia from the Career Services. Students interested in internships in greater China should submit: - a brief letter indicating the type of internship they seek, their qualifications for such internships and their preferred location (s), and
- a one/two page resume.
These papers should be submitted to Professor Carla Freeman (room R608; e-mail: cfreeman5@jhu.edu). China Studies will assist students in locating internships. However, most students have found internships through their own networking; and students are advised to pursue their own searches. A list of organizations that have provided internships for China Studies students in the past and student assessments of their internships are available are accessible through China Studies to students in the program. Regardless of the source of information about a particular internship, students themselves will apply directly to potential hosts. Normally this would be done early in the spring semester, but some organizations such as the State Department (deadline: November 1) have earlier application deadlines. The terms and arrangements for specific internships will be negotiated directly by students with potential hosts. China Studies will arrange an informational meeting on internships during the fall semester. In early April, students wishing financial assistance for the summer internships should apply to China Studies. Students who receive these funds will be asked to provide a one-page report describing their experiences for the reference of students seeking internships in the future.
